Flash discs are small and portable, so they are easy to lose. The drives themselves are cheap to replace but the information stored within could be confidential or irreplaceable. To combat this flash drive security software protects the data from unauthorized use if the drive is lost of stolen.

There is an abundance of flash drives because they are versatile. They can be read by computers with operating systems like Linux, Mac OS X and Windows as well as other devices like PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, DVD players and some mobile smartphones.

Using flash drive security software

Today drives are marketed that store up to 256 GB of information, so important files or programs could be lost. Software solutions now exist that enable the USB’s data to be encrypted automatically. Operating systems like Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows 7 provide data protection software which allows a password to be added to the disc.

Some USB drives take this further. Businesses with classified information should use flash drive security software to make sure their data is safe. Setting up the drive is fairly easy. Initially you are asked to create a ‘container’ which is a secure area of storage on the drive. Before it’s encrypted, this area can be made invisible to prying eyes.

The encryption options follow the set up of the ‘container’ and the closer the instructions are followed, the more secure the information will be. A password containing 20 + characters in a combination of numbers, letters and symbols is recommended and TrueCrypt also suggest that the password is something that can be plausibly denied “In case an adversary forces you to reveal the password.” It leaves no ‘fingerprint’ on your drive or files indicating the existence of protected data, so you can confidently claim that there isn’t any, if you are asked the question.

This sort of protection is a little excessive for most people’s requirements, but is in the market place because there have been a few high profile examples of security breaches due to the loss of an unsecured USB disc. In the UK, information on 6,500 pensioners was lost by HM Revenue and Customs and in America, a stolen USB stick full of classified US Army details was put on sale in Afghanistan.

But we don’t all require government backed protection. Most of us want protection from our own mistakes. Leaving a USB device in the computer with the files unlocked is something that most people would think nothing of, but the data and the drive are vulnerable when linked to a PC. One supplier has provided the solution. It involves automatic relocking of the files when inactive for a set period of time.

None of these features come cheap. Expect to pay anywhere up to 150 dollars for this sort of protection. For that money, the data really has to be confidential. The type of USB memory stick that most of us require will be around 4GB and contain password protection that automatically deletes the contents after a set amount of failed attempts. These cost less than 10 dollars and can be bought from specialist computer stores, online retailers, electronics shops as well as convenience stores.

Digital security is essential in today’s world, but unfortunately it is all too easy for confidential and personal information to fall into the wrong hands. It is not just members of the public that are at risk of having their data stolen, even corporations and government departments regularly suffer serious security breaches. If you often use a USB thumb drive, or pen drive as they are also known, it is all too easy to misplace the device with potentially devastating consequences. One way that you can minimize the stress and worry associated with a lost or misplaced thumb drive is to use the latest USB encryption software.

If you think that using USB encryption software will be too technical, you are wrong. The programs used are easy to understand and can be set up in a matter of minutes. It takes very little effort to ensure that all the data contained on your thumb drive is inaccessible to anyone who does not have the password.

Choosing USB encryption software

Today there are dozens of applications widely available that offer USB encryption, but if you want to guarantee that your data is safe, you will need to ensure that you choose software that has been tested to be foolproof. It should be stated there there are some programs available that claim to secure data which in actuality can be cracked with the use of a special attack algorithm.

There are certain standards in use that help consumers choose software that cannot be cracked, this includes the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS), and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Avoid applications that do not adhere to either of these standards.

Before you start comparing the options available to you, it can be useful to delve a little deeper into the benefits and possible pitfalls of using USB encryption software. The most obvious advantage is that it would be almost impossible for a hacker to access your personal data, in today’s world we should not take digital security for granted. This type of software requires very little memory space and will not impact on how accessible the files on your actual PC or laptop are.

The major disadvantage with this type of security system is that if you were to misplace your USB stick, you would not be able to retrieve your lost files. It makes sense to always back up important data separately, though this should also be encrypted to help ensure security.

Another possible headache is if you forget the password that you set up, this would be an incredibly frustrating situation, and one that can cause you a serious problem. Though you would not want to choose an easy to guess password, you should still pick a code that can be easily remembered.

When choosing USB encryption programs, the best approach to take would be to search online for independent reviews of the various products. If any program is found to be lacking, you can be certain that information in this regard would be available online. Do not place value on the praise heaped on the applications by their actual designers, always seek out independent opinions.

Every single day, new malware and viruses are unleashed which are incredibly ingenious and creative. One of the easiest ways to lose all your files, or to have your confidential information such as passwords stolen, is through a compromised USB stick. If you use a USB stick on any computer other than your own, you will run the risk of having it infected with a virus or malware that can go unnoticed until serious damage has been done. The easiest way to prevent this most annoying of problems from occurring is to use USB disk security software.

Most PC users are simply ignorant of how much at risk their files and data are. If you think that the pre-installed security suite that came with your computer when it was bought is adequate against today’s threats, you should think again. Likewise, if you have downloaded security software free of charge off the net, this is also unlikely to be comprehensive enough to protect you from today’s viruses and hackers.

The humble USB stick does offer many benefits to users, being able to store as much as 64 gigabytes of data in a product that is as small as an average index finger is a real technological accomplishment. Almost everyone that has a PC, laptop, or net-book will own at least one USB stick, and with DVD and CD players gradually being phased out, the uptake of portable storage devices will only become greater.

Why bother with USB Disk Security?

But this trend for using USB sticks has also created massive opportunities for programmers of a criminal nature to wreak havoc on computer users. It is not just ordinary people who are at risk of having data stolen or rendered unreadable, even multinational corporations and government agencies can have their computers infected and permanently damaged by rogue code transmitted by a compromised USB stick.

It is actually extremely simple to get around most firewalls today, a simple command in a well hidden “inf” file can almost instantly lead to the destruction of every single file on your computer. The moment an infected USB stick is plugged into any device it can unleash a virus that is unstoppable.

The good news is that there is software available that can help to ensure that your USB drive does not end up causing you a serious amount of anxiety, these applications can vary in nature from simple to extremely advanced. USB disk security most often involves the installation of a program on your computer’s hard drive which automatically scans any USB sticks that are inserted for potential threats.

If you want to guarantee that your data is always as secure as possible, you will need to pay for the privilege. It would be a waste of time to downland freeware which the designers suggest can protect your computer against the most recent threats, such claims are unlikely to be true.

It make sense to spend a small amount of money on an application that will allows your files and folders to be secured against the latest virus definitions and malware codes. The cost of losing your data is immeasurable.

In the year 2000, the world of technology introduced a new storage device that was about the size of a typical postage stamp, and allowed people to keep a personal copy of any computer data they wished to have quickly at hand. Along with this gadget came additional issues which have required implementation of USB flash drive security. Let’s take a look at some of the issues.

More About USB Flash Drive Security

These devices are easy to store anywhere such as in trouser pockets, jackets, purses, backpacks and laptop cases. They are often left unattended in public places where anyone can walk off with them, and not even know there is a scan disk inside. This creates a potential risk of very important data getting into the hands of the wrong type of people.

A scan disk can be used to store corporate data and is very difficult to track because these devices can be kept under a wrist watch being worn on the arm. They are not only small, have become very common, and are easily moved in any container or item of clothing. Because of this many corporations have banned them to minimize the risks involved in company data being stolen and sold.

The highest percentage of information which is stored on these devices are customer and employee data. This might not be significant if it were only the personal information of individuals who work there, or people who like to keep their resume easily on hand to print a copy if needed. However, much of this is information that belongs to a company, and is not considered data that just anyone else should have.

The next highest percentage of information found on SDs are the crucial details of business and marketing plans. With this type of information so easily lost by taking a set of keys out of a pocket, there is little wonder why corporations are not interested in allowing the employees to have use of these while they are on the job. Pick Pockets could easily walk away with all the vital information for a highly competitive business.

Many people keep their personal financial information on these handy little devices, including their bank accounts, and track their credit card spending. Most people know their tax payer identification, but if it and other data like user names and passwords are also stored on these units, any thief could instantly log into all of the accounts. Losing one of the USB devices could wipe a family out.

Freelancers such as authors and computer programmers make use of these tiny little devices to keep all of their information, outlines, stories and programming tools and languages. Best selling books may be near completion, and a new software package worth millions of dollars could very quickly be stolen, and no way to trace it down to retrieve it. Intellectual property is all done on computers, and most of it is stored on USB drives.

All of the computer information of businesses and private citizens is backed up on digital media each day. Most of it can fit on something the size of a postage stamp. When you consider what could happen to the storage device, it might be time to find out more about USB flash drive security.

Flash drives are small, convenient and portable – for these reasons they are also easy to lose so it’s essential to make your USB flash drive secure. Drives are cheap to replace, but the data could be confidential, like files from work, or irreplaceable, like digital images. To prevent this, users can make a USB flash drive secure to protect their data from unauthorized access or they can buy a secure flash drive.

What ways can you make your USB flash drive secure?

There have been some well publicized examples of security breaches as a result of unsecured USB drives. In the UK, HM Revenue and Customs lost the details of 6,500 pension holders when a USB device was mislaid and in America a stolen USB drive, stored with classified US Army information, was put up for sale in Afghanistan.

To combat this, some flash drives are equipped with embedded hardware encryption but if not, there are software solutions which allow the content of a USB disc to be encrypted automatically. Operating systems like Windows 7 and the Apple Mac OS X provide software for data encryption which allows a password to be added to the drive. And in terms of hardware, some machines have programs that automatically overwrite the contents of a drive if the wrong password is entered after a prescribed amount of chances.

These security measures have been introduced because their popularity with consumers and businesses continues to increase. They are commonly used to store data in place of CDs or DVDs and are used to transfer information from one of the many different computer devices with USB connectivity.

Laptops, notebooks, tablets, PDAs, cell phones, portable gaming systems, portable music systems and printers often come with USB ports and some allow direct transfer from a flash disc. With the growth in portable devices, there’s an added danger that data could be compromised.

Since flash drives were introduced in 2000, they have become increasingly popular with both consumers and companies. There are a lot of different USB drives on the market. Some are made for mini USB ports, others are water and shock resistant. They are available in different colors and with either plastic or flexible rubber cases.

Others come with belt hooks or key rings and there are novelty ones modeled on consumer products like cars and footballs or food like burgers or chocolate bars. Some are shaped like a key and towards the end of the year, Christmas Tree shaped ones become commonplace. In common with other computer goods, the size of the memory and the access speeds have improved with time, whilst prices have fallen.

Today they are not only sold in specialist computer stores or online retailers. They are available in electronics shops, CD and DVD retailers as well as supermarkets and convenience stores. They can store up to 256 GB of information and often allow 1 million write or erase cycles. They weight around 30 grams and are durable because of the lack of moving parts. They can be read by computers with operating systems like Linux, Mac OS X and Windows as well as other devices like PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, DVD players and some mobile smartphones.

Computers have quickly become a standard of life which is why USB drive security software is increasingly important. There is not one person alive that can say that they have never feasted their eyes on a computer screen at one time or another in their lives. With the number of people that opt to utilize computers rising, the amount of people that are paying extra money to use accessories for their computers is also rising; therefore, creating a great market for USB drive security software programs.

Most adults and even teenagers are beginning to adopt the principal of using flash drives to save their precious data. These drives are made to plug directly into a USB port, where they can easily transfer files from your computer onto a small outside port.

Why use USB Drive Security Software?

Due to the small size of these devices, around 5,000 of them go missing on a day to day basis. Obviously, if the primary reason why you utilized the device was for recreational purposes, then losing the device is no big deal. There are a lot of people that leave some pretty intimate information on these small external plug ins.

Business information, journal entries, and even personal financial records, can all be stored on these small drives. Therefore, you could imagine if this information were to come in contact with the wrong hands, how much havoc could be reaped on your personal information. Identify thieves, would love to get their hands on these external devices so they can begin ruining your life.

If you are going to keep all of your precious and private data protected by utilizing one of these flash drives, it is imperative that you protect yourself as well. There is an affordable piece of software that exists that will help you safeguard all of the information that you load onto these external discs.

Installing the USB drive security software is not difficult to do. You will need to plug the device directly into one of the USB ports located on your computer. After it has been plugged into one of your ports, you will need to then proceed to open up the data, just like you would typically do in order to access any previously stored information.

However, after the flash drive has been opened, you will need to lock in your data by clicking a small icon that should appear on your screen that either will say lock in or save. By utilizing this software, all of your files that you save on your flash drive will be encrypted.

The only way the encrypted files will be able to open for you to view is if you enter in a password to access the files. The files that are encrypted will be impossible for anyone to break through. Therefore, you can rest easy that if you were to lose your external data port, that no one besides you would be able to gain access to the information that was previously stored on it.

USB drive security software is designed to protect the user of the flash drive. It not only encrypts private information so it cannot be viewed by outside entities, it also securely deletes files on your drive that you do not want anyone to ever be able to gain access to.

USB drives are neat little things. But their neatness and all round portability is also their weaknes. A bit like you can never find your car keys when you’re in a hurry, it’s really easy to put a USB drive down somewhere safe and then forget where you left it. So making your USB drive secure for when this happens is quite important.

There’s a small chance the flash drive could get stolen but most of the time it’s more likely to be a friend or colleague or family member who “borrows” the memory stick so they can quickly move files from one computer to another.

There’s no real problem with that – the drives aren’t exactly expensive nowadays.

It’s the files that are on them that are more at risk…

If the files on your flash drive aren’t protected then they can be viewed by anyone with a computer that has a USB port. So any machine that’s been made in the last decade or so can look at the files.

If it’s client or company data, that’s bad news. You don’t want someone else looking, James Bond style, at the files that you’ve been entrusted to look after.

If it’s personal photos, it may still be bad news. There’s never enough free disk space on portable devices like USB drives. Which means a simple press of the delete key can wipe out files on your USB drive that aren’t otherwise secured.

Unless you’re an uber-geek, the trick is to use a piece of software to make your USB drive totally secure. Whether it’s lost or just borrowed.

Should you worry about your Flash USB security? Yes, if the files on the drive mean anything to you.

To an extent, it’s up to you how much you worry about your Flash USB security.

If all you’ll ever store on your USB stick are a few photos then making your flash drive secure may not be much of a priority for you.

But if, like me, you’re often carrying around data relating to your firm or your firm’s clients, then making sure that your USB drive is safe and secure should be high up on your mind.

I know it’s boring, techie stuff but to my mind it’s a lot better to have to type in a password before I can access data on a drive than it is to go in, red faced, to a client or your boss and have to explain how the files you were entrusted with have been stolen or (probably more likely) wiped by your child or a colleague because they wanted to shift some files from one machine to another.
